Greetings Hikers...Happy New Year – Hope it includes lots of hiking. This is our schedule of hikes for the year. Since 12 months is a long time, we may have to make a few changes along the way, but this will get us started.

 

I have listed two groups of hikes...the Challenge Hikes, which are on Saturday and typically 10+/- miles, and the Pathfinder Hikes, which are on Wednesday and are 3 to 5 miles.

CHALLENGE HIKES - These hikes leave from the San Carlos Library at 8 a.m. and are scheduled to return as noted. There is a $5 charge for hikes sponsored by the San Carlos Park and Recreation Department.

 

Jan. 12…8 am – 4 pm Butano Ridge

13 miles                        Through the redwoods, along Pescadero Creek, and up to Butano Ridge, 1,600-ft. elevation gain, with signs of the logging industry 100 years ago. A fine hike to start the new year.

                                    Rated strenuous.

 

Feb. 9...8 am- 1 pm     LaHonda OSP

5 miles                          Open grasslands, views of the coast, and a giant redwood. This secluded preserve requires a special entry permit and carpooling. This will be our first opportunity to hike this preserve.

                                    Rated easy to moderate.

 

Mar. 8...8 am – 5 pm   San Francisco to Sausalito

11 miles                        From the Caltrain station at 4th and Townsend, SF, along the Embarcadero, through Crissy Field, over the Golden Gate Bridge and on to Sausalito. Return by ferry to Pier 1 and back on Caltrain.

                                    Rated moderate for distance.

 

Apr. 12...8 am-3 pm    Big Basin State Park

12 miles                        From Waddell Beach: hike 6 miles to Barry Creek Falls and return. The best waterfall hike in the Bay Area. Mostly level hiking with two river crossings.

                                    Rated moderate for distance.

 

May 10...7 am-5 pm+  Pinnacles National Monument

6 miles+                       A great spring hike to the ridge on High Peaks Trail.  An adventure 1,300’ elev. gain                    geology with a chance to see the California condor in flight. Stone 

                                    steps (130 or so) plus pipe hand rails make this an unusual and

                                    exciting hike.  

                                    Rated strenuous.

 

June 7...8 am-2 pm       Wunderlich County Park

10.5 miles                     A double loop hike from the Folger Stable to Skyline Blvd.

1,000’ elev. gain          Redwoods, a mountain meadow and great views make this a classic Peninsula hike.

                         Rated strenuous.   

 

July 26...8 am-3 pm      Purisima Creek Redwoods OSP     

10 miles                        The grand loop…a hike from Skyline Blvd. to the deep redwood

 1,600’ elev.gain         canyon of Purisima Creek.

Rated strenuous.

 

Aug. 9...8 am-4 pm      Portola State Park

13 miles                        Round trip to a forest of old growth redwoods. Bear Creek and

1,800' elev. gain           Peters Creek join, and fields of redwood sorrel cover the ground. This is the place to view the redwood forest in its purest form.

                                     Rated strenuous.

 

Sept. 13...8 am-3 pm...Huddart Park/ Phleger Estate

10 miles                        A loop hike from West Union Creek, up the watershed to Skyline 

 1,400’ elev. gain        Blvd. and return to Huddart Park. Beautiful redwood, oak, bay,

                                    and madrone forest with woodland wildflowers in season.

                                    Rated strenuous.

 

Oct 11...8 am-3 pm...   Long Ridge OSP and Upper Stevens Creek County Park     

11 miles                        A loop hike over the grassy ridgeline and down to the headwaters

800’ elev. gain              of Stevens Creek.

  

Nov. 8...8 am-2 pm...El Corte de Madera OSP

9 miles                          Loop hike through the south part of this preserve. Hike on old 1,600’ elev, gain logging roads and past an ancient redwood tree.

                                    Rated strenuous

 

Dec 13...8 am-2 pm...Sweeney Ridge

7 miles                          Enjoy worldwide views (if the sky is clear) from the ridge where 

                                    Portola looked east and discovered San Francisco Bay. This hike starts at Skyline College.

PATHFINDER HIKES  These hikes are 3 to 5 miles long. We leave from the San Carlos Adult Community Center at 9 a.m. and usually return by noon. There is no charge for these hikes, but be prepared to carpool and drive if necessary. Each hike is rated easy to moderate.
